Not sure it it was Malcolm from Jurassic Park or my high school physics teacher, but one thing I remember from science is that the universe is constantly moving towards disorder. This is very easily seen every day as I walk into my kids’ rooms. Yikes! They get cleaned really well on Saturdays and by Sunday I’m left wondering what just happened. It takes constant, consistent effort to keep things organized. Toys have to be put back, dirty clothes in a hamper, and beds made each and every day.

The same principles apply to our financial lives as well. If you never spent regular, consistent, focused effort on your money and taxes it would gradually move to a very disorganized state. If left unchecked for too long you start getting IRS letters, overdraft charges, poor investment performance, and a big mess that is difficult and expensive to clean up, and in a place you don’t want to be.
